1978 Herreshoff 28

Sister Bay, Wisconsin

ARIEL was built in 1978 by Julian Davies for coastal cruising from Maine to the Bahmas. This L. Francis Herreshoff design first appeared in the early 1940s in The Rudder magazine and is featured in his book Sensible Cruising Designs. She was strip- planked with Port Orford cedar and sheathed at the time of building with fiberglass.

The deck is teak with a plywood substrate sheathed in fiberglass. This appears to be original. The deck needs either stripping the wood and putting a non-skid painted surface or redecking with wood.

The cabin top has been stripped, faired and painted with Awlgrip but the mahogany brightwork and the spars need stripping and varnishing.

The hull is a foot longer than the original plan and has a skylight for added light and ventilation.

There’s 40 gallon monel water tank, 20 gallon fuel tank and 20 gallon holding tank. The QM15 Yanmar diesel engine drives a folding bronze propeller.

This is a classic designed ketch that has a sound and fair hull for someone that wants a project boat.
